Break THRU
Four out of five youth with a history of foster care are diagnosed with serious mental health challenges. Making access to consistent, quality care essential during the transition to adulthood.
Recognizing this critical gap, THRU Project launched the BreakTHRU program in 2023 to provide accessible, trauma-informed mental health services for foster youth and young adults in San Antonio and Bexar County.
As THRU Project enters its second decade of service, BreakTHRU continues to expand support through a low-barrier approach—ensuring participants can access care without unnecessary obstacles.
Through BreakTHRU, participants receive ongoing access to:
- Individual counseling, helping them manage thoughts and emotions, reduce stress, and develop healthy coping strategies
- Peer support groups, offering a safe, supportive environment to connect with others who share similar experiences
Together, these services help young people build emotional resilience, improve mental wellness, and navigate the challenges of independent living with confidence.
What is Counseling?
Counseling is a form of talk-based therapy that helps individuals better understand and manage their thoughts, emotions, and stress. Through counseling, participants develop healthy coping skills, improve emotional regulation, and build the confidence needed to navigate life’s challenges.
At THRU Project, counseling is a core part of the BreakTHRU program—supporting foster youth and young adults as they transition into independent adulthood.
