THRU Project

4 out of 5 youth with a history of foster care are diagnosed with serious mental health concerns.

Recognizing mental wellness as a critical gap in services for the young adults we serve, THRU Project launched BreakTHRU in 2023 to help address this need. Now, as THRU Project enters our second decade of service in San Antonio and Bexar County, BreakTHRU offers a low-barrier, trauma-informed approach to mental wellness.

Participants have ongoing access to individual counseling and support groups. Therapy helps manage thoughts and emotions, reduce stress, and build healthy coping skills. Support groups provide a safe space to connect with others who share similar experiences and to learn practical ways to care for mental health.

Meet Our BreakThru Team

Sarah Waltz, LCSW

I attended the University of Texas San Antonio, where I earned my Master of Social Work degree. I have been in the helping profession for over 10 years and got my start in working with children in residential care through the foster care system.

Throughout my career, I have been an advocate and mentor for children, teens, and young adults experiencing social and emotional turmoil.

Camden Thompson, LPC-Associate

I completed my Bachelor’s in Psychology from Texas A&M University, and my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at The University of Texas San Antonio. I work from a Person-Centered perspective, fostering a collaborative therapeutic relationship where clients and I can work together to explore their challenges, set meaningful goals, and develop practical strategies for healing and growth. By creating a safe and empathetic space, I empower clients to tap into their own strengths and resilience, guiding them toward lasting change.

Eligibility: Youth must be at least 14 years old in foster care, or have a history of foster care and living in Bexar or surrounding counties.
