IMPACT STORY
Anyaondi’s Story

I’m Anyaondi and I was born in San Antonio, Texas, to two immigrant parents. My father is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and my mother is from Mexico. When I was three years old, my nine siblings and I were placed in foster care by Child Protective Services due to neglect. For the next six years, I moved between different foster homes until my aunt was granted full custody of my siblings and me. I lived with her in McAllen, Texas, until I returned to San Antonio, where I came under the care of my 18-year-old sister.

During this time, my family and I experienced housing instability, often staying in government-subsidized housing, with friends or relatives, or in motels. My oldest sister worked tirelessly to support us through college financial aid, student loans, employment, and financial assistance from our father. Despite these challenges, I remained determined to pursue my education. Because my family moved frequently, I chose to attend an early college high school that allowed me to continue my education regardless of which school district I lived in. This decision gave me the opportunity to graduate with both my high school diploma and an associate’s degree, providing me with an early start on my college education.

Today, I am a senior at the University of Texas at San Antonio, pursuing a degree in chemical engineering. With the support of organizations like THRU Project, I have been able to establish stable housing and overcome many of the financial barriers that shaped my upbringing. THRU Project has provided me with housing for the past four years, giving me the stability and peace of mind to focus on my education, personal growth, and career development. During this time, I have consistently earned a place on the Dean’s List, participated in research opportunities, and completed four internships across various industries. These accomplishments reflect not only my dedication to my education but also the opportunities that become possible when students have the resources and support they need to succeed.

THRU Project has also connected me with my mentor, Patrick, who has played an invaluable role in my personal and academic development. Through his guidance, I learned that success in college extends beyond the classroom and that participating in meaningful organizations and extracurricular activities can open doors to new opportunities. More importantly, Patrick has become more than an academic mentor; he has been a source of guidance and support in my everyday life. Whether teaching me how to drive, helping me navigate grocery shopping as a stressed college student, or offering advice when I needed direction, Patrick has consistently helped me move forward with greater confidence and independence.

THRU Project has played such a critical role in my journey. Its support has given me more than stable housing; it has provided me with the foundation to pursue my goals, recognize my potential, and build a future beyond the circumstances of my upbringing. I am proud of how far I have come, and I recognize that many of my achievements have been made possible by the people and organizations that have invested in me. As I prepare to graduate and begin my career as an engineer, I carry that gratitude with me and hope to continue building a future that reflects the opportunities I have been given.
